Lenti, the centre of the less-developed part of Zala County with favourable conditions for slow, healthy and green tourism, was the location of the INSiGHTS project partners meeting hosted from March 6 – 9, 2018 by Zala County Council. Due to its location this area was partly closed and not industrialized after the 2nd World War, therefore the region was able to preserve its traditions and gastronomy. The focus of the visit was on the transnational learning and exchange on green, healthy tourism and IT solutions in destination management. Partners were introduced to the best practices of Zala County, starting with the narrow-gauge railway drive, bunker and tractor tours, traditional pottery workshop and Patóhill Winery Village. The year 2017 LAG “Central Istria” concluded with another workshop of the working group for the Development Strategy of Central Istria 2018-2025 within the INSiGHTS project from the Interreg Danube Transnational Cooperation Program. The workshop was focused on defining the vision of central Istria as a tourist destination and at the same time, the basic strategic frameworks that will be the basis for forming the final document are presented. The stakeholder group was working together to align the vision that will serve as a guideline for local tourism stakeholders and the citizens to maintain balance in attracting visitors based on quality tourist offerings and ensuring unmatched daily living. Accordingly, it has been agreed that Central Istria is a rural hinterland of one of the leading tourism regions on the Mediterranean. It offers its visitors calming and inspiration ambient in which they can recreate, explore authentic cultural heritage, imaginative events and enjoy outstanding local gastronomy. Small local entrepreneurs develop together this desirable space on the principles of innovation, sustainability and authenticity.
In the next period, a public presentation will be held in order to familiarize citizens with the basic guidelines for the development of the destination of central Istria and to give them opportunity to present their views on the proposed vision and strategic framework.
Last week, LAG “Central Istria” hosted partner representatives from Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and Serbia as part of the INSiGHTS project funded by the INTERREG Danube Transnational Cooperation Program in which LAG “Central Istria” is participating as one of the partners.
The study visit was focused on transnational learning and exchange on green and healthy tourism. Partners were introduced to the best practices of Central Istria region, starting with the wine tasting, bike riding at the Parenzana trail, traditional Istrian pastry making and the adrenaline-cultural experiences of tourist offer in Pazin. As part of the INSiGHTS project, LAG “Central Istria” participated in a bilateral study visit to the Development centre of the Heart of Slovenia. The visit was held as an exchange of experiences with the aim of encouraging the development of sustainable tourism and with the mentorship of representatives of CEEweb for Biodiversity, responsible for directing thematic activities on the project. In order to connect the destinations, the event was attended by the director of the Tourist Board of Central Istria – Sanja Kantaruti and director of the Tourist Board of the Motovun Municipality – Iva Jeletić Prodan. During the two-day stay in Litija and Šmartno pri Litja municipalities, the participants were presented with the tourist offer of this region and discussed the possibilities of linking the two destinations through future projects.
Conclusions from this event will be presented and discussed at the next meeting that will gather all project partners and will be held in central Istria in mid-October.
As part of the project INSiGHTS – Integrated Slow, Green and Healthy Tourism Strategies financed from the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme, LAG “Central Istria”, as on of the project partners, has started the process of developing the integrated sustainable tourism strategy of the area of central Istria.
The strategy is being developed in cooperation with the Central Istria Tourist Board, Motovun Tourist Board and Žminj Tourist Board whose areas will it cover. This strategy will seek to emphasize the potential of area for the development of sustainable – slow, green and healthy tourism.
At the first workshop for development of the strategy, local stakeholders in tourism from the public, private and civil sector participated, who with their knowledge and experience can contribute to formulating the development vision and concrete activities for the overall development of central Istria as a tourist destination. The first workshop was held to familiarize the group with the basic objectives of the project and the foreseen tasks, harmonize the method of work and carry out the first activities in the SWOT analysis of the area. The group will meet regularly and, if necessary, will be supplemented with additional members.
Partners from Croatia, Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia met at the 1st Multilateral Walkshop and 3rd internal thematic meeting within the INSiGHTS project – “Integrated Slow, Green and Healthy Tourism Strategies”. On Tuesday, May 2 in Pazin, the INSIGHTS project which LAG Central Istria is implementing as one of the project partners as part of the Interreg Danube transnational program was presented to the media. The participants of the conference were Lenka Šajina from Tourist board Žminj, Iva Jeletić Prodan from Tourist board Motovun, Sanja Kantaruti from Tourist board Central Istria and Iva Jekić from LAG Središnja Istra.
The INSiGHTS project, “Integrated Strategies for Slow, Green and Healthy Tourism”, focuses on the development of attractive tourist destinations through the development of strategies focusing on the protection of natural and cultural resources. LAG “Central Istria”, the already mentioned tourist boards as well as the Istrian region – Administrative Department for tourism as an associated partner on the project will work together on the development of a sustainable tourism strategy which will include guidelines for healthy, green and slow tourism.
This is a unique example in which various stakeholders in tourism will cooperate in order to combine fragmented tourist offer and jointly determine the direction of tourism development in central Istria (Pazin, Cerovlje, Gračišće, Lupoglav, Tinjan, Sveti Petar u Šumi, Karojba, Motovun, Sveti Lovreč, Pićan, Žminj).
The implementation result will be the first tourism development strategy for the area of central Istria. In addition, the existing bicycles and tracks in the area will be revised and mapped through the project. The development of pilot tracks is also planned, which will link all important points of natural and cultural heritage and thus make a complete tourist product.

Fourteen partners from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia have launched the INSiGHTS project – “Integrated Slow, Green and Healthy Tourism Strategies”. The partnership is led by Pons Danubii European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation from Komárno, Slovakia. The 30-months long project (January 2017 – June 2019) was approved within the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA).
